Research Ireland

Research Ireland is Ireland’s new competitive research and innovation funding agency, established following an amalgamation of Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council. The establishment of the agency was a key action of Impact 2030: Ireland’s Research and Innovation Strategy. 

Who we are?

Research Ireland is an agency of the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research Innovation and Science working in collaboration with higher education institutions and other state agencies such as the Higher Education Authority (HEA), IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland.

Who we service?

  • The research and innovation funded by Research Ireland is delivered predominantly by researchers and innovators in Ireland’s Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), leveraging the foundations and capacity within the public higher education and research system.

  • The reach and impact of the knowledge gained through this funded research and innovation within the HEIs is significant – for public, private and third sectors.

  • While Research Ireland does not fund industry directly; our funding programmes can support company research and innovation through partnerships between academic institutions and companies on specific research projects; provide access to PhD graduates and research infrastructure and through our Enterprise Fellowships programme we can embed academic talent in companies.

What we do?

As set out in the Research and Innovation Bill 2024 Research Ireland:

  •  Promotes and develops research and innovation in the State by designing and administering funding schemes, in accordance with international good practice, for the award and disbursement of funding for research and innovation.

  • Promotes research and innovation which supports the development and competitiveness of enterprise and employment in the State, nationally and regionally, and to so do, in co-operation and collaboration with Enterprise Ireland and the other bodies.

  • Supports the development and maintenance of a national system of research and innovation, in co-operation and collaboration with the HEA, Enterprise Ireland and the other bodies.

  • Promotes and supports the contribution made by research and innovation to economic, social, cultural and environmental development and sustainability in the State.
