Simple ways to cut costs and your carbon footprint, with the supports that can help make it happen

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Ireland, sustainability may seem like a nice-to-have or a future ambition. But the reality is, it’s fast becoming a core business advantage and in many cases, a commercial necessity.

Whether you're a retailer, manufacturer, or service provider, adopting greener practices can reduce your costs, open up funding opportunities, and strengthen your brand in the eyes of customers, employees, and investors alike.

“Sustainability isn’t just about the environment, it’s about efficiency, reputation, and growth,” says Sean Cronin, a sustainability advisor with experience across startups, corporates, and green charities. “It can help you retain staff, become more attractive to ethical investment funds, and reduce costs without a massive budget or full-time sustainability team.”

The key is to start small, focus on what you can control, and make use of the government support that is already out there. Here’s how.

Small steps for big impact

Energy efficiency

Start by looking at lighting, heating, and any energy-intensive equipment. Can you switch to LED lighting? Improve insulation? Use smart timers or energy monitors? You can get funding towards these upgrades with supports like the Energy Efficiency Grant and Climate Action Voucher.

“A lot of SMEs rent their premises, so they don’t always benefit from full retrofits,” Cronin notes. “But you can still look at what you do control: your lighting, your heating settings, even how equipment is used and maintained.”

Tip: Energy audits like the Green for Business and GreenStart programmes can help you pinpoint where to save.

Waste reduction

Look at what you're throwing out, whether it’s packaging, materials, or food waste. Could you reduce, reuse, or recycle more effectively? Are there circular alternatives to some of your supplies?

“If you’re in a shared space or hub, chances are your energy setup is already quite efficient,” says Cronin. “In that case, waste becomes a really good area to focus on. It’s visible, measurable, and it shows customers you care.”

Carbon footprint

You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Measuring your emissions might sound technical, but even a basic understanding of your biggest sources, like transport or energy use, can help you spot low-hanging fruit for reduction.

There are free templates and online tools to get started, like the Climate Toolkit 4 Business. “What’s important is to keep it simple and actionable,” says Cronin. “Set a short-term, achievable goal and build your ambitions once you get the adrenaline rush of early success.”

Sustainable sourcing

More SMEs are now reviewing where their materials, ingredients, or products come from. Are your suppliers local? Do they use excessive packaging? Can you switch to certified or recycled alternatives?

“Even service businesses can think about sustainability,” Cronin adds. “It might be about reducing travel or going paperless. Every business has touchpoints it can tweak.”

Supports to help you go green

There’s no need to go it alone. There are a wide range of grants, advice, and training programmes designed to make sustainability more achievable for businesses of all sizes. Here are some of the most relevant, from free expert advice to funding for upgrades:
